The Arezzo Antiques Fair: A Unique Sunday Market

There’s no better way to spend a lazy Sunday than strolling through an outdoor market. The Arezzo Antiques Fair is one of the most renowned in Italy. It is an unmissable option for lovers of antiques and vintage charm. This market, established over 50 years ago, is a must-visit for those seeking unique and historical items.

When and Where Does the Antiques Fair Take Place?

The “Fiera Antiquaria” takes place on the first Sunday of every month, as well as the preceding Saturday. This format allows visitors to enjoy a full day of exploration and shopping, even when the first Sunday falls on the 1st of the month. The fair is mainly held in the beautiful Piazza Grande of Arezzo, one of the city’s most famous and historic squares. However, the market extends beyond the square, occupying the surrounding streets and passing under the magnificent Vasari Loggia, designed by Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century. This historical setting provides a unique atmosphere, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in a cultural experience.

What Can You Find at the Antiques Fair?

At the Arezzo Antiques Fair, variety is the key. You can find a wide range of antique items, from large rusty keys that evoke stories of historic palaces to vintage cameras that tell the tale of technological evolution. The stalls also offer works of art, silverware from different eras, rare books, and furniture ranging from Baroque to modern styles. Every corner of the fair is a hidden treasure, where collectors and enthusiasts can discover unique and fascinating pieces.

Piazza Grande and Its Historical Architecture

While strolling through the fair, it’s impossible not to notice the architectural beauty of Piazza Grande. This public space is famous for its partly medieval and partly Renaissance design. The facades of the buildings overlooking the square tell stories of past centuries, with details that reflect the evolution of architectural styles over time. The Vasari Loggia, with its elegant arches, is one of the highlights of the square, offering pleasant shade as you explore the stalls beneath it. Don’t forget to look up from time to time to appreciate the magnificence of the surrounding architecture and capture the beauty of historical details.

Cafés and Food Breaks in Arezzo

Being in Italy means you never have to go far to find a great coffee. If you need a break during your visit to the fair, Caffè Dei Costanti, located in Piazza S. Francesco, is the ideal spot. This café is highly appreciated by locals and offers ample outdoor seating, which is perfect for people-watching. Depending on the time of day, you can choose to have a quick espresso to recharge or enjoy an Aperol Spritz while discussing your purchases with your companion. The welcoming atmosphere and lively view of the square make this break a pleasant and refreshing moment.

Sushi in Arezzo

If you feel like taking a break from the traditional Italian menu, Arezzo also offers other culinary options. Just a 5-minute walk from the market, across from the train station, you’ll find Tao, a sushi restaurant that’s a true discovery for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Tao is famous for its all-you-can-eat menu at just €13, which allows you to enjoy a wide selection of fresh sushi and other Japanese dishes without limits. It’s an unmissable opportunity to try excellent cuisine at a reasonable price, and it’s a great alternative to the usual pizzerias and trattorias.

Gelato in Arezzo

No visit to an Italian city is complete without gelato; Arezzo is no exception. Before wrapping up your day of shopping and exploration, stop by Gelateria Sunflower, also located in Piazza S. Francesco. This gelateria is famous for its pistachio gelato, considered one of the best in the region. After spending hours walking and browsing through the fair’s stalls, treat yourself to a moment of sweetness with gelato, the perfect way to end your day of exploration. The pistachio gelato is an excellent choice to recharge your energy and conclude your Arezzo experience on a delicious note.
